Vitamin C May Wipe Out Heart Disease
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, has been proven over the years as a crucial component in the fight against heart disease. Studies have been done over the years and a Noble Prize winning scientist has proven that Vitamin C is very important not only for a healthy heart and cardiovascular system, but for overall health as well.
A Little History
Millions of years ago nearly all mammals manufactured ascorbic acid in their liver from glucose. Then some 55 to 60 million years ago one of ancestral primates was afflicted with a genetic mutation that prevented him from producing his own ascorbic acid. As of today we all know this is still the case.
There are 4 enzymes required to convert glucose to ascorbic acid. We are only able to produce 3 out of the 4 enzymes and lack the ability to make the final conversion to ascorbic acid.. To the best of our knowledge, only two non primate animals the guinea pig and a fruit eating bat have suffered similar mutations and survived. Both lived in areas where ascorbic acid was readily available.
